Cancer
While I was going through chemo, my acupuncturist timed my treatments so that I could get the most benefit for curbing nausea, and other side effects, while also boosting my immune system. It worked very well; after one chemo when I was unable to get an acupuncture treatment, I was much more knocked out, and without the acupuncture, the side effects of chemo lasted longer. During radiation, I also had regular acupuncture treatments. I felt like it was strengthening my body, and giving me more energy the whole time.

I decided to use acupuncture during my treatment for breast cancer because of my mother's experience. She had breast cancer and went through 6 weeks of daily radiation treatment, during which time she was getting weekly acupuncture treatments. She felt quite good during the
radiation - contrary to her doctors' warnings that she would feel very tired - until her acupuncturist went on vacation for 2 weeks. At that point, she crashed and felt exhausted. When her acupuncture treatments resumed, so did her energy level.
For myself, when I went through 16 weeks of chemotherapy and 7 weeks of radiation for breast cancer, I felt that acupuncture was extremely helpful. I had a relatively easy time with both treatments, particularly radiation, and I believe that regular acupuncture was an important factor. I believe it helped me maintain my energy and helped rid my body of toxins more quickly. The two worst weeks I experienced were the ones when I had to miss my acupuncture treatments. As important, acupuncture was a relaxing, supportive therapy, focused on my physical health and healing-something I really needed during this hard time. I recommend it to everyone I know who is going through cancer treatment (and so does my mother!).

In the fall of 2004, I was leading a extremely healthy lifestyle when, through a self-exam, I found a lump. From that moment on my entire existence was altered in an irreversible way. I transformed from being a woman with an independent will to a woman dependent on the guidance of others. The healthy non-traditional lifestyle (yoga, eating raw foods, eliminating alcohol, caffeine, etc.) I was leading was now going to be replaced by Western medicine. The toxins I worked so hard to rid of my system were now going to be replaced by other types of toxins or 'medicine' to 'kill' the cancer. I was extremely conflicted when I was told I would have to undergo a 16-week regimen of chemotherapy and steroid shots followed up by radiation. At that point I was in communication with a friend of mine, going through fertility issues, who had been attending acupuncture, with Eileen for a while. I decided that Acupuncture would be a way for me to balance my treatments - East meets West style. During that terrible winter of my discontent, acupuncture was my refuge. The treatment Eileen provided was the one of the most compassionate and gratifying experiences of my life. The combination of homeopathic medications and acupuncture eased the side-effects of my chemo treatments. My nausea was alleviated and my headaches seemed to disappear by the end of a session with Eileen. The effects of the treatments worsened each time and acupuncture helped my system to 'filter' the toxic 'medicine'. I, also, suffered from joint pain which was treated as well. Overall, Eileen provided a service which made me feel of sound and body. By the end of the session I would feel euphoric. It was the one time a week I felt the 'weight' of the cancer was lifted off my shoulders and my body was actually truly working at ridding itself of this horrible disease. I honestly do not believe I would have been able to endure all of the side-effects of the chemo and radiation without acupuncture. Today I am completely healthy and completely convinced acupuncture is part of the reason why.

Fertility
As I write this I am holding my beautiful 3 week old son in my arms. I can honestly tell you that in my heart of hearts I believe I have a child because I went for acupuncture with Eileen and Geoff. My husband and I struggled to get pregnant for several years. I found Root and Branch because the infertility clinic we were going to suggested trying acupuncture. I began working with Eileen while continuing infertility treatments. She was phenomenal to work with - patient, kind, gentle and very knowledgeable about infertility treatments. Eileen was always willing to discuss my cycles and my emotional state of mind. After my last cycle of infertility Eileen suggested I see Geoff and consider taking herbs. I followed Eileen's advice and actually alternated between Geoff and Eileen for acupuncture treatments. Geoff is also wonderful to work with as well. A few months later I found out I was pregnant! Not only do I feel that acupuncture assisted with my infertility I feel it assisted with my overall good health. I have never felt more mentally, emotionally and physically fit in my life as I do when I am undergoing acupuncture treatments. If you are considering acupuncture, my advice would be that you need to be open to it and willing to "think outside of the box". I will admit, some of the things that Geoff suggested I eat or drink, where quite bizarre (sorry Geoff) – but did I mention that I am holding my beautiful 3 week old son in my arms?

Digestive
My Name is Lynda Holich and I was referred to Geoffrey DePaula at Root and Branch Oriental Medicine by The Mind Body Institute In Brookline, Ma. I was hopeful to become more balanced with my digestion and menstrual cycle which changed dramatically while participating in a 6 month long hike along the Appalachian Trail. I hadn't tried acupuncture previously but was extremely open to healing naturally and peacefully. I received acupuncture once a week for approximately one year. I committed to this process because Geoffrey came highly recommended and I was ready to invest in my health and make significant improvements. I began feeling changes in my body immediately through acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbs. Not only did my body heal but I learned an infinite amount of information about Chinese Medicine which has always intrigued me. Im a huge proponent of acupuncture and Chinese herbs and constantly recommend this treatment to friends, family members and clients who are stuck in their health. I also believe that healing takes time and it's a natural, slow process.
When I first came to Root and Branch I was practicing Interior Design and still continue to consult with clients. I most recently graduated from a program which I received a certification in health counseling. I'm hopeful that my experience of acupuncture and learning about more holistic ways of eating will help future clients. I thank Geoffrey and Eileen for establishing a wonderful business and and have always appreciated their expertise, professionalism and passion for their careers.

I contacted Eileen and Geoff because I was dealing with stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure, sleeplessness, exhaustion, weight, hot flashes and mood swings. After evaluating my medical history and examining me, Dr Geoff DePaula felt I was suffering from candidiasis, which is an imbalance of yeast in my system as a result of taking too many anti-biotics, birth control pills and prednisone to combat allergies. He suggested I read the "Body Ecology Diet" written by Donna Gates to help people with digestive problems, those who are overweight, have candidiasis, or who want to improve their immulogical system. Although I was reluctant to go on this diet as it seemed so restrictive, I decided I would give it a try.
My program began as follows: Dr. DePaula gave me weekly acupuncture treatments, prescribed Chinese herbs, educated me on the value of meditation and yoga/nidra, and suggested I do moxa treatments at home while simultaneously (and very importantly) changing what I eat. He also suggested I buy organic meat from a local farmer, and when ready, buy raw milk from a local dairy, which I will do when my system has healed somewhat.
The results have been amazing! Not only do I feel better, but I lost 15 lbs., have more energy, am sleeping better, have fewer mood swings, am meditating daily, and managing stress much more efficiently. My sugar cravings have decreased, which means I am much less likely to end up with diabetes and heart disease, which runs on both sides of my family. It has only been about six weeks since I started the treatments, but I began seeing results in the first or second week.
I am turning 50 years old this year, but am much more optimistic about slowing down the aging process, improving my relationships, and living a much happier lifestyle.
I would highly recommend Eileen and Geoff to anyone suffering from any kind of physical or emotional problem because they take a very comprehensive approach to their patients' conditions. No other professional in the health care industry looks at the connection of physical and emotional ailments, nor do they have correlated solutions to heal current symptoms and prevent the onslaught of new diseases. When I first met with Dr. DePaula, I was on a sabbatical from a position in the high-tech field, which was often a highly stressful position. Although I was not able to retire from working forever, I am much more knowledgeable in areas of health, nutrition and relaxation so now that I am back to work, I feel much more in control of my life. I have since brought my children to some of the Root and Branch workshops / treatments. It has truly been a life-changing experience!

Gynecology
My name is Naomi Steckman and I am t twenty-three years old. From the time I was born I have had numerous GYN difficulties. All females in my family have had GYN diseases including PCOS ( Poly cystic Ovarian Syndrome), Breast and Ovarian Cancer, and Endometriosis, as well as other related health issues such as diabetes. My mother was sick her entire life because of these problems and died when I was eight years old from Breast Cancer. From the age of puberty I was overweight and showing signs of Poly cystic Ovarian Syndrome. Not only did I have irregular or sometimes absent periods, but when I would finally get a period, my pain was so intense that I would be bed-stricken, hospitalized and given all kinds of pain medication ranging from vicadin to perkasets to even morphine. I have had five surgeries in attempt to correct the pain by removing the cysts, but each time there was an operation scar tissue would develop and therefore create more pain. In my final surgery the doctors had to remove scar tissue that was actually entangled on my left ovary creating even more pain then I had ever imagined. I was put on birth control pills to "regulate" my cycle but my body would get used the hormones after several years causing them to either have to operate again or change birth control and give me pain medication. By this time I was tired of my health getting in the way of my life. I was tired of always being sick and missing out in school, and fun activities while my peers were healthy and I was tired of feeling this way. Finally I came to Geoff. I saw Geoff for about four to five years. Immediately after seeing Geoff I began to feel better. Not only was I able to come off of all of my pain medication as well as my birth control, and get a regular period with almost no pain, but I lost 55 lb. as well! Geoff worked hard on teaching me not only skills to improve my physical health but my mental and emotional health as well. As one aspect of my life began to improve, others followed. Geoff DePaula changed my life. He gave me hope and the empowerment to take my health into my own hands!

General
I came to Geoffrey DePaula in the throes of Meniere's disease, a fluid imbalance in the inner ear that causes horrific bouts of vertigo. I had had many of these bouts and all systems were depleted. Over the several years that I have been seeing Geoff for herbal and acupuncture treatments, I have regained a level of functioning that I would not have thought possible. Geoff gave me a sense of hope when I felt hopeless, and made that real with his compassionate, diligent and truly outstanding treatment. I have traveled from Hartford, CT to Boston and now Hopkinton, MA to see Geoff and it has been and is truly worth the effort. In this time, I have also gotten to know his wife Eileen, and I would recommend both of them without qualification. I am truly grateful that I found these two wise doctors of holistic health and I only wish they would move to Bloomfield, CT so all of the people that I recommend them to in this area could also benefit.

We strongly recommend Root and Branch for the skilled and effective services Eileen and Geoff provide.

I began seeing Eileen for acupuncture treatments in the fall of 2005. I had experienced a succession of emotional and physical traumas and was suffering from depressive symptoms including a lack of energy, motivation, and intense grief. I started with Eileen because she was highly recommended. Also I had recently moved to the Boston area, and my current practitioner was too far away.
Eileen was (and probably still is) a godsend. She diagnosed my main complaints in a novel manner…novel as compared to other practitioners I had seen. While my previous practitioner gave me temporary relief for a few days, I could feel that Eileen was treating a deeper imbalance and I became progressively stronger. The difference could be felt after the first treatment.
Eileen's manner is one of nurturing competence. Her ability to reach out and support a patient, while remaining personally grounded is itself therapeutic. Her practice of continued education is inspiring, and she encourages this in her patients if they so desire. She gave me references and materials to read on many occasions, actions which empowered me to take better care of myself.
Eileen has an expansive toolkit to draw from and her reputation is certainly deserved. I already have recommended her to multiple friends.

Geoff DePaula is one of the finest acupuncturist's I have ever experienced. I have had treatments in England, Germany, and New Zealand as well as in the US.
Geoff's treatments always left my family feeling significantly better. He was always able to clearly articulate treatment goals and help us do other things to get better, including effective herbal adjunct treatment.
Most notably, his ability to relate fully to his patients, his personal calm and wisdom were always an added gift of his treatment and not an insignificant part of the healing process.
I would recommend Jeff to anyone seeking help for persons of any age. Acupuncture is a treatment our family continues to use for maintenance of wellbeing or adjusting when we get off balance, but I always think- I wish I lived near Geoff DePaula and could continue to use his services.

I visited Geoff DePaula in May after a fall which left my knee swollen and painful. I felt immediate relief after my first treatment. He also inserted press balls into my ears which were very useful in managing pain as my knee was healing. Geoff has been wonderful in identifying some other underlying health issues and has prescribed Chinese herbs which have had some amazing effects. I have really been helped by his holistic approach to healing and his insights and recommendations for complete mind body health.
